Your baby is growing - the first 2 months

by Marijke on May 25th, 2008

If you’ve just discovered that you’re pregnant, chances are that you’re between 6 and 8 weeks pregnant. Since a full human pregnancy is about 40 weeks, that puts you in the middle or end of your second month.

So, what does your baby look like at this stage?

This was your baby at 4 weeks. Although you likely didn’t know you were pregnant yet (though you may have suspected), this is one of the most vital times during your baby’s development.

At this stage, your baby’s brain, spinal cord, heart and other organs begin to form. Your baby is still only a tiny fraction of an inch long.

At 9 weeks of pregnancy, your baby’s heart will have already begun to beat (at around 5 weeks), the neural tube, which makes up the spine, closed at 6 weeks, the umbilical cord became clearly visible around 7 weeks and that’s also when the arms began to sprout. At 8 weeks, your baby will have webbed fingers and is about a half an inch long or so.

The picture to the right is 9 weeks gestation, when the baby begins to move around.
