Some antidepressants OK during pregnancy

by Marijke on June 26th, 2008

If you take prescription antidepressants and are pregnant or want to be pregnant but are concerned about the medications, you may not have to worry. According to a study published in the May issue of the British Journal of Psychiatry, expectant mothers can safely use prescribed antidepressants during their first trimester.

The researchers used data from the Quebec Pregnancy Registry and analyzed the records of 2,329 new mothers diagnosed who took antidepressants for at least 30 days before pregnancy. The findings showed that the duration of antidepressant use in the first trimester of pregnancy was not associated with an increased risk of birth defects.

So, speak to your physician if you have concerns, but this is good news for mothers who need those medications.
