The importance of prenatal vitamins - and a give away
There are a few pieces of advice that pregnant women hear again and again when they’re planning on becoming pregnant and while they are pregnant. One of those bits of advice is very important, and that is that they need to take prenatal vitamins faithfully, and the earlier they start (meaning before pregnancy), the better.
Prenatal vitamins are different from the regular multivitamins you may be used to taking and that’s because there is a large emphasis on certain vitamins in the prenatal versions.

I am here because someone I care very deeply about is preggers and I want to give her some helpful advice (and she is asking for it!) and I am a vitamin alcoholic so this would be perfect for her! I know how much they have helped me (fish oil etc and this is great because there are especially made for mothers to be! Thanks so much for a great contest!

24 yrs ago, when I was pregnant with my 1st daughter, I took my pre natal vitamins as directed by my dr. Unfortunately there wasn’t much known re the lack of folic acid and how important it is for pregnant women.
My daughter was born with spina bifida occulta (sp may be off); thank goodness its not severe but it definitely has impacted her life.
Now she is pregnant with her first child and more is known about folic acid and its importance. I phone her every day and make a pest of myself to make sure she has taken everything and that she’s getting enough folic acid!! (isn’t that what mom’s are for? ) :-)
Great giveaway!

I am here because I can’t wait to get pregnant. I have a rare blood disorder (I’m 1 out of 100 in the world with the disorder and will be the first documented patient to giving birth to a baby). So I am always looking for great information as to having a healthy pregnancy and baby. Right now I take a Prenatal and a Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega “with a burst of Lemon”. Love the burst of lemon, it cuts away the little bit of fish taste!!
Thanks for the great Giveaway!!

I came here because Kristen King tweeted about it on Twitter and I am currently pregnant. I am taking Nature’s Made prenatals, but I confess that I often forget to take them.
I’m probably not getting enough DHA in my diet, and this blog served as a good reminder. I just hope the third trimester is not too late to reap the benefits. If I don’t win your contest, I will head to CVS to get these vitamins. And I will think of you when I take my current prenatals. :)
Thanks for the great post.

@Anne - good luck to your daughter; you’re right, 24 years ago we weren’t as aware of the role of folic acid.
@Stefi - I do hope you come back and share your story!
@Dawn - very cool that you read about this on Twitter. I’ll have to tell Kristen. :-) I hope you return.

I answered the poll choosing “I followed a link here”, which is the truth, but I am also hoping to get pregnant w/in a few months. I am currently researching prices on Cod Liver Oil and plan to purchase some this week. I have read a great deal of information on http://www.westonaprice.org about the benefits of cod liver oil & butter oil. Thanks for your information!

Thanks for an interesting post.
Can I introduce Sanatogen ProNatal Plus Omega-3. It provides folic acid, Omega-3 and other essential vitamins and minerals to meet a woman’s special nutritional needs before, during and after her pregnancy.
More information can be found at http://www.pronatal.co.uk. They have also got a very useful baby naming tool which is great for providing some inspiration!

I had a hard time taking my prenatal vitamins when I was pregnant with my daughter 10 years ago due to morning sickness (I have to say that is was all day sickness LOL). I am pregnant now and I had morning sickness again (this time is more morning sickness than all day sickness) but I started to take prenatals before I conceived. Now, the problem is that most of the time prenatal vitamins make my stomach upset. My doctor prescribed different kinds of prenatals (3 to be exact) and none of them work. I started taking organic prenatal vitamins; for two months everything went well now I started to have an upset stomach again. I take them off and on and my mother and my boyfriend get really upset with me for not taking them. However, my doctor tells me if I cannot keep them down to compensate eating foods rich in iron and folic acid. I am going through a hard time right now because I feel bad that I cannot take them all the time and I don’t want to hurt my baby. It is hard to take them and an hour later feel sick as a dog.
