Proposed law stiffens penalties for violence against pregnant women

by Marijke on August 26th, 2008

Canadian lawmakers will be debating a bill to stiffen penalties against people who commit violent crimes against women who are pregnant. With this law, judges would take into account the women’s pregnancy when passing down a sentence after conviction.

The proposed law does have detractors as it may muddy things up about the rights of a fetus. To read more, you can find an article at the CBC.ca that explains the law and its possible impact: Proposed law would stiffen penalties for violence against pregnant women.
