Watch how much Tylenol (Paracetamol) you give your babies

by Marijke on September 20th, 2008

Acetaminophen, which you can get generically or in brands like Tylenol or Paracetamol outside of North America, is the most frequently recommended pain reliever and fever reducing medication recommended for children. For young babies, it’s often bought as Tempra.

Doctors say that while it is still the first choice in many such cases, parents and caregivers should be careful about how often they give acetaminophen - not in terms of overdosing but in terms of how often they use it.

In a study of over 200,000 children in 31 countries, researchers have uncovered a connection between the use of acetaminophen in early childhood and the later development of asthma, nasal allergies and eczema. To be honest though, the researchers weren’t too enthusiastic about releasing the information because they are afraid that parents will turn from using acetaminophen to Aspirin, which would hold a much greater risk. When Aspirin is given to a child with a virus, there is a chance of the child developing a serious, often fatal, complication called Reye’s syndrome.
