Should pregnant women be included in clinical trials?
It used to be that clinical trials only included men. Then, women became included if they were post-menopausal. Now, in some trial, women who are reliable birth control can participate. But, pregnant women are still off limits.
Should they be? The governing thought is that it’s too dangerous for the baby if a pregnant woman is participating in a trial, but often clinical trials are of medications that have been around for quite a while and researchers are looking at different doses, different regimens, or different uses.
