Limit hairspray exposure if you’re pregnant

by Marijke on November 21st, 2008

While fixing your own hair while you’re pregnant is likely not an issue, if you work in an environment that uses a lot of hair spray, as in a salon, you may want to be careful when you’re expecting a child.

Hypospadius is a defect of the penis. The urethra doesn’t go all the way to the end and, instead, opens underneath the glans, on the penile shaft. It’s a correctable defect but it requires surgery and this can be traumatizing for both the parents and the child.

Researchers have found that the push for pregnant women to take folic acid has decreased the number of boys born with hypospadius, but women who were exposed to hair spray at work had two to three times the risk of having a boy with the defect.

More research needs to be done, but this is something to keep in mind.
