Child experts want NBC to cut "The Baby Borrowers," reality show

Have you seen the television show, The Baby Borrowers? I haven’t, so I can’t comment on the show itself, but I have heard about it and I was wondering a few things about the parents who let their babies be part of the show, and so on.

Now, it seems that some child psychology experts have grave concerns about the show and they want NBC to cancel the program. According to ABC news, Child Experts Call NBC to Pull Reality Show, “The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry released a statement Wednesday calling for NBC to pull the series “The Baby Borrowers,” which is based on the same-named popular British TV program.” NBC responded with “Richard McKerrow, executive producer of “The Baby Borrowers,” is not concerned that participation in the show will be mentally damaging to any of the show’s participants.”

Is the show a good idea?

In one way, I think the show has merit. Many teens don’t know or realize what it means to be totally responsible for another human being. And, of course, this gets harder as the child becomes less helpless and starts to exert his or her personality into the mix.

On the other hand, might there be a better way to do this? One expert suggested that a teen shadow a parent, but still be made to get up and participate in every detail of the child’s life. Would that be just as good a message?

What do you think? Do shows like this have merit?
