Creating a birth plan can feel overwhelming, and many people wonder whether it’s necessary. While I don’t believe birth ever goes exactly as we “plan,” it’s important to enter labor and birth knowing your options and your preferences.

Use your birth plan as a space to learn about the variations that may occur during labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period. Go into birth with knowledge and ask questions before labor begins about what choices and resources are available at your birthing location. Talk with your provider about the options available at your birthing location.
